To make soap using the cold process, you must fully emulsify a mixture of sodium hydroxide (lye) and water with fatty oils. After that, you can add botanicals, essential oils, natural colorants, and exfoliants at trace, which is when the mixture is thick enough. Pour the mixture into moulds and let it sit for up to 1-2 days. During this time, the mixture will heat up due to the saponification process, and the excess water will start to evaporate. After this, remove the soap bar from the mould, cut it into bars, and place it in a warm and dry area to cure for another four to six weeks. This curing process allows the lye to break down the oils and for the water to evaporate, resulting in a firm bar of soap that is ready to use.
